| Cruise Ships Clean Up Their Act (a little) |

Surfrider's Clean Ocean Act
After a tough three year battle the hard work of the Surfrider
Foundation paid off last year. In May of 2008 the Florida legislature passed the Clean Ocean Act (HB897 and SB1094). The Act requires owners and operators of day-cruise gambling vessels to implement wastewater pump-out systems at ports, or adopt a closed-loop system similar to what cruise ships have begun doing. Over the past three years the Surfrider Foundation has worked countless hours on the campaign to get the bill passed. With eleven day cruise gambling ships in Florida, two of which are located in Jacksonville, the NOAA report estimates that 26,600 gallons of blackwater and 53,200 gallons of gray water per week (per ship) are dumped into the oceans off of Florida. The bill was proposed by Senate Sponsor Mike Haridopolos (R Indialantic) and House Sponsor Stan Mayfield (R-Vero Beach). More information about casino cruise dumping and the work of the Surfrider Foundation to help prevent it can be found at: http://www.surfrider.org/sebastianinlet/news/gambling.htm.
