Here are some new shopping tips, both local and online. I just saw that Costco online has organic crib mattresses for sale so I wanted to pass that along. They are a really good deal for organic - $119 each. Conventional mattresses can off-gas all kinds of nasty chemicals including formaldehyde and flame retardants which may even be linked to sudden infant death syndrome. My favorite laundry detergent is in the store at Costco now - Ecos. Costco also has really good deals right now on super efficient washers and dryers. I traded up recently and saw no difference on my electric bill from before I had my twins, even though I now do two or three loads of diapers per week on the super hot setting. They were totally worth the money. (And now I don't have to dry things for three hours.) In other news - A store just opened on 3rd Street in Jax Beach called Ecos that has organic children's toys and clothes. It also has some very cute home products and shoes that are all environmentally friendly. When you are shopping consider buying things used. Not only is it recycling so it saves the energy and resources needed to produce new products, but the money often supports local businesses or charities, and saves you money that you can then donate to worthy causes like, ahem, the Public Trust.
