In Marjorie's Wake on PBS

This month PBS will be airing a documentary on Marjorie Kinnan Raulings' boat trip on the St. Johns River.

The much anticipated," In Marjorie's Wake: Rediscovering Rawlings, a River and Time" film to be aired throughout the state.

Equinox Documentaries, Inc.

By recreating the historic river trip that Pulitzer-prize winning author Marjorie Kinnan Rawlings once made on the St. Johns in 1933 and contrasting that to a contemporary journey of today, "In Marjorie's Wake" (IMW), by Equinox Documentaries, examines the many ways in which the St. Johns River has shaped culture—literature, art and music—over time. Jacksonville educator and musician Jennifer Chase and Winter Park educator and writer Leslie Poole re-traced Rawlings' "Hyacinth Drift" journey during the film, which Rawlings originally chronicled in "Cross Creek."

A high definition one-hour documentary that retraces a historic & literary trip that Pulitzer winning author once made on the St. Johns River is being broadcast this month on PBS affiliates around Florida, including Jacksonville.

In addition to chronicling the modern journey that Jacksonville playwright/ musician Jen Chase and Winter Park writer/educator Leslie Poole make on the river, the film also uses considerable archive images of Rawlings, and others relevant to her era and her "literature of place."  The film also features interviews with Jacksonville landscape artist Jim Draper,  J.T. "Jake" Glisson, who was a neighbor of Rawlings at Cross Creek, and the late Dessie Smith (Prescott), who made the original 1933 river trip with her.

The film includes many nature and wildlife scenes,  actual home movie footage of Rawlings at Cross Creek, and extensive coverage of the modern boat journey made by Poole and Chase. Over 45 hours of film, including aerials and underwater, were shot in order to make this documentary. The film project was produced by the non-profit Equinox Documentaries, Inc. of Orlando.

It will be broadcast on PBS affiliates around Florida in April, and later released nationally. Author Bill Belleville scripted and co-produced the film, while Bob Giguere co-produced and directed. (Belleville earlier wrote the book "River of Lakes: A Journey on Florida's St. Johns River.") DVD's of the film, a music CD of original songs by Jennifer Chase, and a new book recounting the experience by Belleville ("Rediscovering Rawlings") are all available via the Equinox website.
