The WaterSense® and Florida Water Star SM Labels Water efficiency has become easier. In efforts to become more energy efficient, many homeowners have taken to using Energy Star appliances, saving on utility bills and helping with sustainable practices in the home. Energy Star is now a household name, and this concept of resource efficiency has expanded. The WaterSense and Florida Water Star labels are environmentally aware certification systems advertising to product consumers when a product is water efficient, much like the Energy Star eco-label.The WaterSense label is sponsored by the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency (EPA), providing independent testing and certification of products that have shown to be at least 20% more efficient than comparable conventional models. This system is available for landscape irrigation, pressure-regulating shower heads, low-flow toilets, and many others found at www.epa.gov/watersense. The Florida Water Star label, tailored specifically for Florida, is being adopted by the Saint Johns River Water Management District (SJRWMD) and was created to promote water efficiency in much the same way as the EPA’s WaterSense. Originally, this program was created for new homes so that more efficient household appliances, plumbing, and landscape irrigation features would be installed from the get-go. The program has developed to include retrofitting existing homes as well as to commercial use. Other water management districts throughout Florida have been implementing this label program, and some cities have even provided financial incentives for builders who get their homes certified with this label.
