Controversial Idea Gains Acceptance
I am not sure how comfortable I would be with this decision, but
you have to admire cities who take creative approaches to their
energy problems.
> The City of Barcelona Spain wanted to find ways to use solar energy. The problem was that they could not find any open spaces in which to place solar panels. Then an idea hit them. "Let's use the cemetery!" > > The cemetery is located in the town of Santa Coloma de Gramenet, a working class suburb of Barcelona. At first the idea spurned > rejection from the many residents. They felt that the panels would be disrespectful to the dead. However, once the solar panels were placed above the 5 story mausoleums the residents changed their minds. The panels are unobtrusive and were installed in a tasteful manner so as not to disturb visiting families who come to pay their respects. Flowers were placed along the mausoleum walls to detract from the panels above. The panels provide enough energy to power 60 homes and save 62 tons of carbon dioxide from being released into the atmosphere per year. > > The residents are very happy with the project and there are plans to expand the amount of panels to triple > the capacity of the energy created. > > This story aired on the Channel 4 news this morning, but there are many articles regarding this unique approach on the web should you want to read more. > > A blog by Intern Terry Drake |
