State of the River Report 2008

What is the State of the River Report?

I was talking with a friend this weekend and the topic of river-floating came up. I said that we should definitely go sometime but joked, "yeah, but after reading the River Report let's not go fishing." When my friend didn't laugh I wasn't really surprised, the joke wasn't all that funny. However, I was surprised when he asked, "What's the River Report?" That's when it struck me, where has all the media coverage been about the State of the River Report? Save a few articles by Ron Littlepage that I was able to find online there simply hasn't been any, at least not in the popular news media sources. For those that don't know, the State of the River Report is a fairly comprehensive document produced by local researchers that covers the past, current, and predicted future health of our river, the St. Johns. It covers nutrient levels, fish health, oxygen levels, even algal blooms, and let's us know if we're getting better, doing worse, or should expect about the same. Perhaps most importantly to the average person, it even let's us know what we can do ourselves in order to improve the health and quality of the jewel of Jacksonville. So take some time and visit sjrreport.com. You don't have to read the entire report, but at least glance through the pamphlet, perhaps even send it along to your friends. That way, when you make your next joke about fishing in the St. Johns, your friend still won't laugh, but at least they'll know what you're talking about.
