Kayak Paddle Sizing Guide
Before you embark on your kayak trip, you need to select the right equipment, specifically a correctly sized paddle. The key factors for choosing the right paddle are your height and the width of your kayak. Sea kayaks will have the narrowest width, while recreational kayaks will be the widest. Measure your kayak at the widest point to determine your boat width. If you are between two sizes, it’s generally best to choose the shorter paddle size to minimize the weight you need to carry.
| Paddler Height | Boat Width | |||
| Under 23″ | 23″ to 28″ | 28″ to 32″ | Over 32″ | |
| Under 5′ tall | 210cm | 220cm | 230cm | 240cm |
| 5′ to 5’6″ tall | 215cm | 220cm | 230cm | 240cm |
| 5’6″ to 6′ tall | 220cm | 220cm | 230cm | 250cm |
| Over 6′ tall | 220cm | 230cm | 240cm | 250cm |
Safety & Stewardship
When paddling in Northeast Florida, your goal should be to observe and not disturb. Give wildlife plenty of space and follow all local restrictions. You should also closely follow the tide schedules, as many launch points are not accessible at low tide. Be cautious of currents as well, as stronger currents can create challenging conditions, especially for inexperienced paddlers.

What safety tips should I know before paddling Florida’s waterways?
For safe paddling in Florida, closely monitor tide schedules and local weather conditions. Plan your route before embarking and let someone know where you are headed and when you expect to return. Although not required by state law for anyone over the age of 6, life jackets are recommended for all paddlers, and you should carry safety items, including sunscreen, bug spray, a whistle, and a dry bag. Use extreme caution when crossing channels or navigating areas with motorized boats and heavier traffic.
